Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing a “magnificent” attacking player in the summer transfer window, with a host of other Premier League clubs also keen.
Newcastle prepare for biggest game in decades
Eddie Howe’s side may have picked up an important 1-0 win away to West Ham on Monday night, but there is only one game that truly matters to the team and the supporters this week, in the grand scheme of things. On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, looking to end a painful 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, which is a scarcely believable statistic.
Howe and his players know that they can become instant legends with victory at Wembley, in what would be an achievement that is remembered forever. The Magpies are coming up against a superb Reds team, however, with Arne Slot’s side cruising to Premier League glory this season.
Regardless of what happens at Wembley this weekend, however, Newcastle know the importance of making some key new signings in the summer window, ensuring that they continue to kick on after a quiet couple of windows this season. Now, a new transfer target has been thrown into the mix.
Newcastle keen on "magnificent" Lyon star wanted by PSG and Liverpool
According to a new report from Caught Offside, Newcastle are interested in signing Lyon winger Malick Fofana this summer in a potential £40m+ move, with the youngster himself open to leaving.
The Magpies are far from alone in eyeing up the exciting 19-year-old, however, with Liverpool one of the clubs they are looking to pip to his signature. Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are all mentioned as potential suitors, too.
Fofana is a player with a huge amount of potential, already catching the eye for Lyon at such a tender age, scoring six goals in just five starts in the Europa League this season.
The teenage Belgian also has three goals and four assists to his name in Ligue 1 this term, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as a “magnificent” footballer.
Primarily a left-sided winger, Fofana could come in and provide great competition for Anthony Gordon in that area of the pitch – potentially more than Harvey Barnes currently is, following a slightly disappointing season for the Englishman that has seen him restricted to just seven starts in the Premier League.
Given his age, the Lyon starlet should only get better, too, and if Newcastle could beat Liverpool and others to his signature, it would feel like a major coup.

Fofana has won one cap for Belgium’s senior team to date – surely the first of many in the coming years – and he has represented his country across six different youth age groups, which outlines his pedigree.
