Having been released by Leicester City at the end of last season, Robert Huth remains a free agent. Now, top flight English clubs must wait until January before they can register the German with eligibility in their Premier League squads.
What’s the word?
The three-time Premier League winner may now be 34-years-old, but he still has something to offer at the top level, and there are several clubs who could have done with adding Huth’s experience and authority to their ranks this summer.

The former Germany international didn’t feature a single time in the league last time out, and must now be desperate to prove that he still has what it takes to cut it in the Premier League.
Southampton boss Mark Hughes, who worked with Huth during his time in charge of Stoke City, would have been wise to offer the free agent – valued at £2.25 million by Transfermarkt – a career lifeline this summer.
Saint Huth
The Saints came perilously close to relegation last time out, due in no small part to their poor defensive record. Whilst this was addressed in some measure with the summer signing of Jannik Vestergaard, Huth’s physical presence and leadership could certainly have proved itself very useful to Hughes over the course of this season.
Signing the 6’3” German would also have been a cost-effective solution. As a free agent, Huth would have been worth a roll of the dice. Certainly, should Southampton’s defensive struggles continue this time around, Hughes may come to regret not having gambled on the unattached veteran when he had the chance.
