Eidur Gudjohnsen had quite a stellar footballing career – the player who started his Premier League career at Bolton ended up chasing his dreams all the way to Chelsea and Barcelona before finishing his career further down the line in 2017.But interestingly enough, the now 41-year-old centre-forward revealed that his career could’ve taken a different path altogether because he could’ve ended up at Anfield instead of Stamford Bridge.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
When talking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk Live Show, Gudjohnsen revealed that the then Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier was a big fan of his and even attended a lot of Bolton’s games to scout the player.
“Initially I thought I would be moving to Liverpool. Gerard Houllier showed a lot of interest, he’d been at a lot of our games. That was the one before Chelsea came in.”
But once Gianluca Vialli of Chelsea picked up the phone and called him, it was all over and the striker packed his bags and moved to west London.
He ended up playing a total of 262 games for them, scoring 78 goals and providing 31 assists along the way as well, proving to be quite a purchase.
Of course, he parted ways with Chelsea in 2006 when Barcelona came knocking but his time with the Blues remains one of the standout stints in his legacy.
But what could’ve been had he become a Red instead of a Blue?
