Tottenham Hotspur have had a bid for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial rejected, according toÂRMC Sport.
What’sÂthe word?
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino recently insisted that he wants to bring in some new signings before the transfer window shuts in just under three weeks’ time.
Tottenham are the only club out of last season’s top seven that have not yet strengthened their squad this summer.
While their rivals have taken spending over the £100m-mark, the North London outfit have not parted with a single penny.
RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi revealed the surprising news that Spurs have bid for United’s Martial and have been knocked back.
Bouhafsi also tweeted that Inter Milan’s attempt to sign the Frenchman on loan has not been entertained by the Red Devils.
Could this move happen?
Martial was in and out of the United team last season, forced to prove that he was worthy of a place in Jose Mourinho’s setup.
Despite a stronger end to the campaign, the forward’s long-term future at Old Trafford still has a question mark hanging over it, particularly after he was left on the bench for last week’s Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid.
Judging by this latest news it seems that United want to keep the 21-year-old, but he is unlikely to be guaranteed first-team football this season.
Even if Martial decides that he wants to leave, it would be hugely surprising if the North-West outfit agreed to do business with Tottenham.
United would not want to strengthen a potential title rival, and given the staggering transfer fees in the current market, they would demand a significant figure for the attacker.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not one to overpay, so it seems that a deal would be unlikely.
